Laser Hair Removal: Everything You Need to Know
Your body has around five million hair follicles, and while you may love some of your body hair, some of it may not be as desirable to you. Removing body hair is not a new movement or a fashion trend.
People have been finding ways to eliminate hair for hundreds of years. With today’s technology, the process has become much easier. Instead of shells and stones, we have razors and laser hair removal treatments.
If you’re ready to stop spending so much time shaving, this article is for you. There is a more permanent solution, and we’re here to tell you about it. Keep reading to find out everything you need to know about laser hair removal.
How It Works
First, you need to know how it works. It sounds intimidating and painful, but it’s not as bad as you think. While it’s not the most comfortable process, as you’ll be exposing yourself to a stranger, our team will do everything we can to put you at ease.
You’ll feel a hot pop on your skin from the laser, but it’s quick. Some lasers will have cool air blowing that will help reduce the heat.
Some areas of the body will be more sensitive. Typically, places with thicker hair are more tender, such as the pubic and underarm regions.
The laser will send light through your skin to the end of the hair follicle. The light will damage the hair, and eventually, eliminate growth.
When you arrive at the skin care clinic, you’ll be taken to a private room that is specifically for laser hair removal. Everyone is required to wear protective eyewear too.
The length of the treatment will be based on what areas you are having treated. The back and legs typically take a while and could take up to an hour. Your upper lip will only take a few minutes.
Who Can Be Treated
Laser hair removal is typically advised for women. However, men can also invest in the treatment.
The laser targets dark hairs, so if you have blonde or white hair, there are other hair removal methods that will be better. The treatment also works better on light or fair skin.
Before your appointment, you may be asked about the medications that you’re taking. There are some ingredients that can make your body sensitive, and it may not be safe for you to get the treatment.
Process Length
It takes more than one session to achieve the results you want. Typically, you’ll have six to eight sessions about six weeks apart. Depending on the area of the body and your type of hair, it may take a few extra sessions.
Pre-treatment Prep
It’s important to prepare for your appointment properly. This will ensure you don’t have any complications.
You’ll need to shave the area you are having treated about 24 hours before your appointment. Do not wax or pluck, as this will remove the hair follicle.
You’ll need to remove your makeup and any products you have on. If you’re having your underarms treated, you’ll need to remove your deodorant. Any serums, lotions, and other products can cause pigmentation and scarring. You’ll also want to avoid at-home tanning products.
It’s also crucial that you stay out of the sun before your appointment. This includes tanning beds.
There are some areas that are easier to keep out of the sun. If you’re having laser hair removal on your face, arms or legs, keep them covered as much as possible and wear sunscreen.
You’ll be more likely to blister and scar if you’ve spent a lot of time in the sun. The laser will also be able to reach the hair follicle easier.
Post Treatment Care
Your medical spa technician is going to tell you exactly what to do after your appointment. Be sure to follow their instruction. By doing so, you’ll likely get your desired results and won’t have any issues.
You’ll need to stay out of the sun in between sessions. You also won’t want to go to the gym and sweat right after either. The area is going to be vulnerable to infections and bacteria growth.
Avoiding the sauna and intense exercise for 24 hours is advised.
The area is going to be sensitive and swollen, but only for a few hours, so don’t worry. Your technician will typically put a cooling gel on the area before you leave the spa.
They may also give you a list of products to avoid for a few days after treatment. If you have any serums or products in your skin care routine that you aren’t sure about, don’t be afraid to ask if they are safe. Disregarding their recommendations will increase your chances of having unwanted side effects.
Cost
Laser hair removal is an investment. It’s one that will be well worth it though. The price is dependent on a couple of factors: How large the area is and how many sessions it takes.
Small areas like the face usually cost between $100 and $150 per session.
Larger areas can cost up to $500 for each appointment. Everyone’s hair is a little different and you may need a touch-up appointment or two.
